Thank you letters to our soldiers

Today we finished putting together our cute soldiers along with the thank you letters we wrote.  We will be mailing these letters to soldiers in Afghanistan by the end of the week.  We wanted to thank them for making our life here in Canada better, safer, and free!

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is a day observed in the commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty.

The federal department of Veterans Affairs Canada states that the date is of "remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace"; specifically, the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and all conflicts since then in which members of the Canadian Forces have participated.
At Pierre de Coubertin we believe in helping our students whom have never known war, understand and appreciate what those who have served Canada in times of war, armed conflict and peace stand for and what they have sacrificed for their country.
We have been working on several writing projects in our class pertaining to Remembrance Day.  One of which will lead to a collection of "thank you" letters that will be mailed to active soldiers in Afghanistan.

We viewed this video this afternoon:

We will conclude our Remembrance Day celebration with an assembly with Miss Maria tomorrow.

Halloween!

Hola to all!
I hope you had a fantastic, not so spooky Halloween.  Because of the unknown, Halloween is the one of the most exciting holidays, it is often celebrated by both adults and children. The element of surprise makes it fun and unpredictable. Here is some Halloween trivia and fun facts to enjoy the holiday even more.
  • Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death.
  • Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday.
  • Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings!
  • Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes.
  • The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human.
  • Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaters.
  • Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday, with Christmas being the first.
  • Bobbing for apples is thought to have originated from the roman harvest festival that honors Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees.
  • Black cats were once believed to be witch's familiars who protected their powers.
  • The fear of Halloween is known as Samhainophobia.
