We learned to make butter today! I always look for ways to fulfill my munchkins’ natural curiosity. With this activity I showed them not only how to make butter but to get an understanding of what it was to live in 1745.
If you'd like to try to make your own butter at home this is all you need:
We measured ourselves as well. We are learning all about the metric system, therefore we needed to see how tall we are!
- a cup of whip cream
- pinch of salt
- 1 clean jar or other similarly-sized container with a tight cover or lid (I recommend a plastic container, to avoid any accidents:)
- 1 clean marble
- Take your jar and place the marble inside
- Pour the cream into the jar and screw the cover on tightly
- Shake the jar. Let the kiddies go wild (not so much, if the jar is glass). If you have a plastic container with a tight lid, you can even roll it back and forth.
- Listen for the marble bouncing up and down. After the marble cannot be heard anymore, you’ll know the cream is thickening. Keep shaking, and you will soon start to see the glob of butter form.
- Remember to find and remove the marble
- Place the butter into a container of your choice to store or use
Enjoy:)
This week we also enjoyed working our Daily 5 centers:

Enjoy the long week-end and have a wonderful Easter and Passover.
